George Lamming y “Voces del Caribe”: discusiones en torno a la autonomía de la literatura angloantillana

This paper addresses the controversy held by George Lamming, Derek Walcott, Edward Brathwaite and V.S. Naipaul about the possibility of an authentic west indian literature, highlighting the role of the radio program “Caribbean Voices” in the diffusion of this debate. This text contributes to the field of Caribbean literary studies because it approaches the way in which mid-century west indian intellectuals gave form to novels and poetics that, by questioning the colonial racial and cultural imaginaries, gave impulse to a project of aesthetic autonomy which dialogued, at the same time, with other forms of critical thinking that appeared in the region. This reflection is based on the textual analysis of the authors’ essays and works of fiction, seeking to identify, in the light of the postcolonial theory, the ideological features that legitimize or question the symbolic hierarchies manifested in the works. The analysis of the works shows a more autonomous way of interrogating, questioning and describing the historical dynamics of alienation and dispossession that are inserted in their discursive frameworks. The latter is significant, as it marks both the aesthetic maturation of the Caribbean literature in English and its authors, and its entry into the international literary field.Se aborda la controversia sostenida por George Lamming, Derek Walcott, Edward Brathwaite y V.S. Naipaul en torno a la posibilidad de una auténtica literatura anglocaribeña, destacando el papel del programa radial “Voces del Caribe” en la difusión de este debate. Este texto aporta al campo de los estudios literarios caribeños porque se aproxima a la forma en que los intelectuales angloantillanos de mediados de siglo dieron forma a novelísticas y poéticas que, al cuestionar los imaginarios raciales y culturales coloniales, dieron impulso a un proyecto de autonomía estética que dialogó, al mismo tiempo, con otras formas de pensamiento crítico aparecidas en la región. La reflexión se apoya en el análisis textual de los ensayos y obras de ficción de los autores a la luz de la teoría poscolonial, buscando identificar los rasgos ideológicos que legitiman o cuestionan las jerarquías simbólicas manifiestas en las obras. El análisis de las mismas evidencia un modo más autónomo de interrogar, cuestionar y describir dinámicas históricas de alienación y desposesión que se insertan en el entramado discursivo. Esto último es significativo, pues marca la maduración estética de la literatura caribeña en lengua inglesa y sus autores, y de modo paralelo, su entrada en el panorama literario internacional
